Sail Away is a collection of repeating patterns that I created in 2014. I grew up by the Atlantic ocean, surrounded by sailing vessels of all sorts but the most romantic and historical were the sailing schooners, most notably the Bluenose which is featured on the Canadian ten cent coin. I enjoy being out on the water in my own traditional sailing sloop, Guingelot, it was only natural that I would create artwork that featured iconic images of the Maritimes.
I designed numerous collections of dinnerware for the Canadian owned company GiftCraft Inc. over a period of five years from my Ottawa studio. These designs were originally inspired by my travels to Europe and the four seasons. As the collection expanded so did my inspiration, moving into Asia, wine country in California and my own rose garden in Ottawa. The original pieces were either hand thrown or hand built in porcelain and then glazed using a number of mediums including underglaze and luster.
Once the originals were completed they were sent overseas to be used as source for reproduction. The products were sold throughout North America for a number of years.
